Makeup, a lot like fashion, often goes through periods of trends. A few years back, the hype was all about contouring, baking and adding as many layers to your routine, as your skin would allow you to. Today, we look at things a little bit differently.
Artists and celebrities, including Pat McGrath and Alicia Keys, have made us question our own understanding of beauty and have put forward their case for a more natural, glowing skin. Of course, beauty knows no rules and the world today allows us to express ourselves in whichever way we see fit, through makeup or without it. Either way we all know the key to looking good and feeling great lies underneath our makeup and it is our skin that literally hold the foundation to it all. With summer is in full swing, we’re paying even more attention to keeping it naturally glowy and hydrated not by visiting our favourite facialist but instead, opting for more of a DIY approach with the following feel-good face masks.
We’ve added some guidelines for the quantities but feel free to adjust them to get a texture that will stay put.
HYDRATING YOGURT, HONEY AND BANANA MASK
1 tablespoon of honey
2 tablespoons of high fat yogurt
½ mashed banana
This mask is extremely loved by the girls, and guys, of the BY FAR team as it works great for so many skin types and it’s so easy to make. The honey acts a natural antioxidant and absorbs impurities from your skin while keeping moisture locked in. We also love the yogurt, naturally rich in lactic acid which not only hydrates but also soothes (great after a sunburn or any type of irritation as well). Finally, rich in potassium and vitamin A, bananas eliminate dryness and any rough texture, giving you a beautiful natural glow.
CLEANSING CINNAMON AND TUMERIC MASK
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of turmeric
1-2 tablespoons of honey
½ teaspoon baking soda
We reach for this mask any time we break out and it never disappoints! Both cinnamon and turmeric are known to have anti-fungal, antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties and are the ultimate weapon against acne-prone skin. We use the honey to bind everything together and to make sure the skin remains moisturised; over-drying and stripping the epidermis can often lead to excess sebum production and clog the pores. Finally, adding a little bit of backing soda exfoliates, slightly shrinks the pores, preventing any dirt from getting back in!
TIGHTENING EGG WHITE, LEMON AND ROSE OIL MASK
1 egg white
The juice from half a lemon
1 teaspoon of rose oil (you can substitute this with your personal favourite face oil as well)
Powerful and brightening, this mask not only feels amazing but also smells incredible. Egg white tightens the skin and works great for minimising enlarged pores, while lemon brightens any dark spots or discolouration from the sun. Our founders, and their mothers and grandmothers alike, swear by Rose Oil not only for its scent but also for its collagen stimulating properties: rooted in the fatty acids and high quantities of vitamin C, E & A.
AVOCADO, LEMON AND OATMEAL FACE MASK FOR GLOWING SKIN
1 tablespoon of oatmeal
The juice of half a lemon
Half an avocado-mashed
With vacations coming up in the next few weeks, we are lusting over that natural dewy skin glow and aching to get rid of any dullness and dryness accumulated over winter, hence we have found ourselves reaching for this mask especially often lately. Oatmeal and lemon are great antioxidants and work great at exfoliating any build up while the vitamin E, potassium and lecithin in the avocado help moisturise and replenish the skin. Out with the old, in with the new!
